Best ways to workout in the summer heat

Baby it’s hot outside!  It’s officially summertime and even though we will be spending more time outdoors it can be tough to do so on those extremely humid days.  So what are the best ways to safely fit in a workout in the summer heat?  Here are 3 exercises that will help you stay consistent with your workouts so that you don’t miss a day even when it’s really hot outside.

There are 2 important factors to keep in mind before doing any workout in the heat.  The first one is that you must plan to exercise in the early morning hours before the temperature rises.  Generally, 6-8am is best because it is usually about 20 degrees cooler than the afternoon, less humid and the better air quality makes it much easier to breathe.  In addition to that hydration is essential.  When it’s hot outside we sweat much more even without exercising so drinking lots of water is important for your health. My advice is to skip the full blown cardio type of workout on really hot days and instead choose to go low impact.

The 3 recommended exercises below will get your heart beating in a much healthier way when it’s hot and humid outside.  Remember, working the largest muscles in your body, like your legs, does not only get you a beautifully sculpted shape, but will also burn tons of calories at the same time.

1. Yoga in the morning will work every muscle in your body while stretching, lengthening and improving mental clarity for the day.  Taking about a 1/2 hour to practice on your yoga mat early in the day outside or even doing a little Yogalosophy will beat the heat but at the same time will keep your body in tip top shape.

2. Physique 57 is a fabulous exercise choice all year long, but especially when it’s hot outside.  There are 2 volumes of DVD’s and once you practice the routines you will find yourself doing these easy to remember and carefully choreographed exercises all of the time.  All you need is a yoga mat, hand weights and a chair for support.  Physique 57 is so addicting because of the quick results it gets that I tend to catch myself doing 1 or 2 of the moves while brushing my teeth at night…cracks my husband up, but he also loves the way it has sculpted my body.

3. Tracey Mallett’s The Booty Barre plus Abs & Arms is another hot weather workout choice that will define, chisel and sculpt your body.  With a mixture of Pilates, ballet and yoga you will strengthen and stretch every muscle in your body.  The total workout is almost an hour and a 1/2 long, but it is broken up into sections that you can pick and choose to do on separate days.

There really is never an excuse to exercise.  Just like with anything else in life, with a little planning even on the hottest days of the year you can do anything.
