Sure, most want to get in shape for the summer, but why not be at your best all year round? Living a healthier life isn’t as difficult as you might think. You don’t have to give up all of your favorite things; just making some simple tweaks to what you’re already doing will positively affect your lifestyle. Here are 5 easy ways to look and feel your best all year round.
Having strong muscles and bones will not only keep you feeling and looking your best now and into your later years, it will also have a direct affect on your mind. Whether you include some free weights, even as little as 5 pounds, or use your own body weight, strong muscles will keep you healthy mentally and physically because you will feel like you can conquer the world; and you will. Make your own food.
You truly are what you eat, so be aware of exactly what you are putting into your body each day. Making your own food is always the way to go when your intention is to be healthy, but don’t be afraid to ask questions of how food is prepared when eating out is your only option. Choose fish over meat as often as you can and include as many vegetables on your plate at every meal. Always be sure to carry a small bag of nuts with you everywhere you go so you’re never hungry; which will only lead to poor food choices.
Shut down the screen time.
I know, you hear this all the time, but do you do it? Make a commitment to yourself and your family to shut down the computers and phones for at least a couple hours each day; and be sure to turn everything off two hours before bedtime. Your phone can literally steal your life away. Electronics not only get in the way of healthy opportunities like going for a walk or getting a good night’s sleep, they also steal special moments that you otherwise would have with your family.
Try yoga; or do more of it.
Yes, yoga will sculpt and chisel your body in the most beautiful ways, but it will also make you stronger (like our #1 recommendation above) physically and mentally. Yoga uses your own body weight to move through poses, therefore making your muscles stronger. In addition, the focus it takes to get through a practice embraces your mind in ways no other exercise can, incorporating tiny moments of meditation and breath that will transform your life. If you haven’t tried yoga, please do, and if you already practice, do more of it. Try one of my favorite yoga workouts here.
Be aware of who surrounds you.
Sometimes we don’t realize the affect others can have on our mental health, we just kind of deal with it all of the time. We could wake up feeling happy and excited for the day, then suddenly be thrown off course by those who surround us. One of the best aspects of life is we have a choice, most of the time, of who we want to spend our days interacting with, so do so wisely. Believe me, I know how difficult it can be to cut the negativity from your life, but it’s an essential component to feeling our best all year round.
