Foods you should NEVER EVER put into your grocery cart!

Most people want to eat healthy and may not intend to buy food at the grocery store that is bad for them, but they may not know what I am about to tell you.  The rule of thumb is very true, stay in the outside circumference of the grocery store.  This is where the foods are the freshest and most whole.  The inner aisles mostly contain foods that are processed, full of salt and packed with preservatives.  How else could they sit on shelves for so long?  Here are 3 foods that you should never ever put into your grocery cart and why…

1. Canned foods.  Any “meal” in a can should be considered very unhealthy.  Canned foods are full of sodium which can lead to high blood pressure.  If you must buy anything canned, be sure it is labeled “low sodium”, believe me you won’t miss the salt.  On a side note, I buy canned beans often but I am sure to fully rinse them before adding to any recipe.

2. Fake foods.  Yet another reason why to stay away from the center aisles of the grocery because that is where foods that contain ingredients that are nearly impossible to pronounce sit.  When we talk about eating healthy we mean whole foods (real ingredients).  Generally, when a food is whole it contains less than 5 ingredients so be sure to read every label.  If you see words like thiamine mononitrate on any food product run away from it as fast as you can.

3. Processed meats.  Well, I have to admit, for years I ate turkey sandwiches thinking that they were very healthy for me.  Turkey is low in fat but the type offered at the meat counter is processed which means it contains other ingredients and were put through a machine to look the way that it does.  My husband actually brought this to my attention when he asked me, “do you think that meat comes off the bird looking like that?”  Cold cuts, hot dogs and sausages not only contain saturated fat but have also been processed with nitrates (a chemical additive that keeps meats fresh) which have been linked to stomach cancer.

Healthy eating really doesn’t have to be complicated at all.  If you eat a balanced diet full of whole foods that are low in fat, high in protein and never forget your whole grains, you will look and feel your best for life.
