How to reduce sodium in your diet and lose weight faster

Cutting back on sodium will not only induce weight loss very quickly, it will also improve your heart health and reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.  It’s recommended that you consume less than 2300mg of sodium per day, that’s equal to 1 teaspoon.  Because most Americans eat much more salt than they should each day it can take some time to grow accustomed to a low sodium diet.  Here are 5 tips to help you along the way.

  • Use fresh herbs.  Since salt is flavor replace it with a healthier option such as garlic, pepper or herbs like basil, rosemary and oregano.
  • Frozen over canned.  Always buy frozen vegetables, never in a can where salt is added to preserve and extend shelf life.  If you have no choice, be sure to rinse the contents of the can before using it.
  • Read every label.  Stay away from processed foods entirely but if you have to buy something in a bag or box be sure to read the sodium content.  Always pick up the low sodium version.
  • Fat free means more salt.  Be sure to remember that foods claiming to be good for you with a fat free label have only added more salt to make up for the missing fat flavor.  You’re better off eating a real, whole cookie freshly baked then filling your body with fake stuff.
  • STAY AWAY FROM FAST FOOD!  Not only is fast food full of fat ( try saying that 10 times), it is overflowing with salt.  If you have no other option than to order fast food choose the healthier offerings and always read the nutritional facts being aware of sodium content.  Sometimes just reading the required poster that shows the fat and sodium content will make you walk out before even ordering.
