I’ve asked myself this question so many times that I figured it was time to get the answer.  If you don’t eat before working out do you burn more calories?  Turns out, you’ll burn about the same amount of calories whether you eat or not before working out.

With that being said, it’s advisable to check in with yourself, see how you’re feeling and estimate when your last meal was because you do need fuel to have a succesful workout.  If you skip eating beforehand your stamina and endurance will be low and your workout will suffer.  You could actually end up burning less calories on an empty stomach because you don’t have the strength to perform the workout properly.

In addition, working out on an empty stomach can increase the production of the stress hormone cortisol; which breaks down muscle tissue and causes the body to hold onto fat. Having a healthy protein and carbohydrate snack like a yogurt, a palmful of almonds or some hummus before exercising will enable you to have a great workout and burn tons of calories and fat.
