Thanksgiving; 8 ways to indulge and keep it healthy

qtq80-PU0r9rThanksgiving is right around the corner, and of course everyone should indulge on the most anticipated meal of the year, but there are ways to also keep it healthy.  The average American consumes 4500 calories on this food-packed day, but there are ways to knock that number down a bit and it simply starts with a mindset.  In addition to giving thanks to those who surround you on Thanksgiving Day, consider incorporating a few, or all, of these 8 ways to indulge and keep it healthy at the same time.

Eat breakfast

Starting Thanksgiving Day as you should start everyday by eating a healthy breakfast will keep you feeling full until the big meal is served.  Make a dish of scrambled eggs or a piece of whole grain toast with avocado and tomato.  You will also be hungry and excited to eat versus uncomfortably full.

Plan a way to fit in a workout the morning of Thanksgiving, even if it’s a quick walk or one of the best workout DVDS. Getting your heartbeat up will not only make you feel incredible all day, it will help create that healthy mindset.

Drink one alcohol beverage

Making the decision that you’re only having one alcohol beverage over the course of the day will not only save you tons of calories, it will enable you to be more present with your friends and family and stop you from overeating.

Share dessert

Of course you should have a little dessert, or even try all of the sweets offered, but instead of eating a big piece of pie by yourself, share it with someone.  You’ll get to indulge but you’ll also cut the calories in half.

Eat tons of vegetables

Keep your eye out for the vegetables and be sure to fill at least half of your plate with them at dinner alongside some turkey and a scoop of potatoes.  Enjoy the gravy and stuffing, but go easy and just be aware.

Drink lots of water

Drinking water everyday is not only essential to keeping your weight in check, it’s also essential for the function of your body, and this certainly shouldn’t stop on Thanksgiving.  Learn how much water you should be drinking everyday here.

Skip the cheese

Because this 100% fat food is just about everywhere on Thanksgiving, do your best to avoid it in full force such as cheese and crackers.  Enjoy the cheesy covered vegetable or the cheesecake, but don’t intentionally overindulge, it’s just not worth it.

Thanksgiving is a cheat day, not a cheat weekend

Because there’s usually so much food on this day, it tends to spill into the weekend.  If you’re leaving with a goody bag, take the turkey and vegetable leftovers and leave the unhealthy foods behind so you don’t continue to eat unhealthy all weekend.
